Improving a patient’s quality of life is our most important concern at every stage. Here at Eastcott we take each patient through diagnosis, staging, treatment and follow up as well as being able to provide holistic support to our cancer patients through analgesic and palliative patient care.
Diagnosis
This can involve our specialised imaging team, surgical and minimally invasive biopsy and sampling, and the use of advanced molecular tests such as PARR and flow cytometry. Our in-house laboratory includes the nucleosome ‘cancer’ blood test as well as slide scanning equipment allowing near immediate review of cytology samples by a clinical pathology expert. Our team will be able to advise on and interpret the best tests for each patient.
Staging
The process of finding out how widespread a cancer is can have a dramatic impact on the case management. Our Specialist-led Diagnostic Imaging team form the cornerstone of our staging process with access to ultrasound, advanced imaging and sentinel lymph node studies. We are able to sample lymph nodes, bone marrow and other sites as required to complete staging.
Treatment
Depending on the cancer type, treatment can be medical or surgical. We are lucky to have five highly specialised Surgical teams involved in the surgical management of neoplasia allowing us to perform highly advanced Soft Tissue, Orthopaedic, Ophthalmology, Neurology and Oral and Maxillofacial surgeries to ensure the best possible care depending on each tumour type.
Medical cancer treatment is also a key part of Oncology, and we can offer full medical options including neoadjuvant (prior to surgery to shrink the tumour), adjuvant (following surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence) and sole treatment (e.g. for blood cancers). Medical therapy includes chemotherapy but is not restricted to this and we are able to use a range of new and developing anticancer drugs as well as immunotherapy (such as the melanoma vaccine) as part of our armoury. We also have an electrochemotherapy system which enables us to use bleomycin to selectively target solid tumours and scars following incomplete excision with a low side effect profile.
Pain management is an important consideration for many cancer patients, and we are able to offer advanced analgesic assessment and management as part of our holistic treatment plans.
